10th Death Anniversary of the Face of Salesian College in the Hills Held

In a simple yet prayerful ceremony Salesian College Sonada remembered the face of the college in the hills for some 46 years (1963 to 2009) by marking 10th death anniversary of Italian missionary Fr Luigi Jellici on 11th August.
Under the initiative of Vice-Rector Dr Tomy Augustine and a team of six Brother students, the college cemetery was cleaned and a motley crowd of Gorabari villagers along with the college staff and students recited the Holy Rosary for the repose of the soul of the former staff member and parish priest at Sonada Fr. Luigi Jellici.
Principal Dr George Thadathil led the requiem prayers and imparted the final blessings.
Fr Jellici died at the age of 94 on the evening of 11th August, 2009 at 8.20 P.M. at Navajyoti Hospital, Gayaganga, Siliguri, surrounded by many Salesians and Sisters.
He succumbed to a massive heart attack after ailing for more than two weeks due to Retro Peritoneal Fibrosis.
On 15th August, the day of the last rites, the funeral cortege left the hospital for Don Bosco School Mirik at 5.00 am and 7.30 am the body was carried in procession for the funeral Mass in the school auditorium. Rector of Don Bosco Mirik Fr. Mathew Pulingathil presided over the Eucharist along with 7 priests.
After the Eucharist at 9.30 a.m. the body was taken to Salesian College Sonada with the accompaniment of 24 vehicles packed to capacity. After journeying over 2 hours through some of the areas where Fr. Jellici ministered, the cortege arrived at Salesian College at 12.00 noon. The body was carried in procession to the college portico where the Holy Eucharist was celebrated on the ground floor verandah. Some 2,000 people took part in the farewell to Fr. Jellici.
