The department of English organized a guest lecture on the occasion of 26th Nepali Bhasa Manyata Diwas on 20th of August 2018. The guest lecture was dedicated to the memory of the renowned Indian Nepal writer, Dr. Indra Bahadur Rai.
The Programme was of two natures. The resource person for the day Assistant Professor Mr. Asish Chettri from St. Joseph’s College Darjeeling was welcomed. Ruchita Sinha, from Part III English Honours Course gave a short speech on the Nepali Bhasa Diwas and its significance followed by a group song which included the participation of students from various departments of the college. It was further followed by poem recitation by Ms. Manisha Thami, faculty from the department of Political Science in the morning assembly.
Talk on Dr. Indra Bahadur Rai and the growth of Indian Nepali literature was delivered by Mr. Asish Chettri after the assembly to the students of the department of English. His talk consisted of an observation of Rai’s writing style, context, and literariness. Dr. Terence Mukhia then gave a short speech on the importance of reading and writing and the power of language in providing identity. He encouraged students to participate more on the literary writings. The lecture was then reviewed by the students. Students had questions, queries and doubts for which they looked help from the resource person once the floor was open for questions and discussions which was satisfactorily explained, suggested and replied by Mr. Asish Chettri. Mr. Vasudeva Naidu, faculty from the department of English too participated in the question round session. Student’s interest and curiosity made the lecture lively.
The programme ended by felicitating the resource person for the day and vote of thanks.
