Kurseong – Salesian College organised for the first time, for a select group of 22 faculty members of both Sonada and Siliguri campus, a one-day Holotropic Breathwork Workshop on 23 January 2019.
Fr K.C. Thomas SDB from Trivandrum and Sr Regi Komoroth CSJ from Bhopal, both certified Holotropic Trainers conducted the 10-hour long program held at Auxilium Centre St Mary’s Hill, Kurseong.
“It is a powerful approach to self-exploration and personal empowerment that relies on our innate inner wisdom and its capacity to move us toward positive transformation and wholeness,” says U.S. trained Fr K.C. Thomas a Holotropic practitioner for over 15 years.
Director of Don Bosco Institute of Psychology and Spirituality. at Trivandrum Dr Thomas adds, “The theoretical framework integrates insights from modern consciousness research, anthropology, various depth psychologies, transpersonal psychology, Eastern spiritual practices, and mystical traditions of the world.”
The name Holotropic means literally “moving toward wholeness” (from the Greek “holos”=whole and “trepein”=moving in the direction of something).
Starting at 9.00 am the participants entered the workshop process using very simple means combining accelerated breathing with evocative music in a special setting. With the eyes closed and lying on a mattress, each person used their own breath and the music in the room to enter a non-ordinary state of consciousness.
Co-Trainer Sr Regi adds, “This state activates the natural inner healing process of the individual’s psyche, bringing the seeker a particular set of internal experiences which facilitates inner healing.”
22 participants were divided into two groups to work in pairs and alternate in the roles of “breather” and “sitter.”
The sitter’s role is simply to be present and available to assist the breather—not to interfere, interrupt, or try to guide the process.
Fr Thomas insists, “One of the most unique and powerful dimensions of HB is its revolutionary expanded cartography of the human psyche described by Stanislav Grof.”
The faculty coordinators for the event were Sradha Pradhan (Sonada) and Alisha Chettri (Siliguri).
