The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) Peer Team Leader, former Vice Chancellor Prof. Raj Pal Dahiya on Saturday 4 May 2019 released Quest for Illustrious Alumni – a photo album chronicling the trajectories of 25 outstanding alumni of Salesian College Sonada from 1950s to 1990s.
Radio Salesian launched the first part of its quest for ‘illustrious alumni’ in May-June 2018 when Director of Radio Salesian and Vice-principal Fr. C.M. Paul and Radio Journalist Bryan Kerr set out on a 9-day trip to northeast India.
“Indeed, it was a grueling summer journey in a Maruti Omni van with no air-conditioning facility, and the team covered some 1,800 kms visiting Assam, Boroland, Meghalaya and North Bengal,” says RJ Bryan.
Hitting 14 major towns and cities like Guwahati, Kokrajhar and Shillong, the team was able to locate and interview 25 ‘illustrious alumni’ from late 1950s to 1990s.
“Astonishingly, they all had fond memories of their days at Salesian College and each one currently occupies important position in society,” RJ Bryan confirms.
These alumni were interviewed in 14 locations (Bongaigaon, Barpeta Road, Guwahati, Shillong, Barapani, Umran, Tapesia, Shashipur, Azara, Ramfalbil, Kokrajhar, Dotma, Bengtol and Oodlabari).
It is to be recalled that till late 1960s, there were residential students from Commonwealth countires including England, Ireland, Australia and Malta studying at SCS in Gorabari. It is also a matter of prestiege that 11 SCS alumni have been ordained Bishops. One alumnus was Chancellor of Assam Don Bosco Unversity, Guwahati.
Alumni featured in the album includes Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellor of Assam Don Bosco University, Guwahati, as well as National Film Award winner, Educationists, Academicians, Agriculturalists, Philanthropists, Social Workers, Magician, Museum Curator, and Anthropologist.
The interviews with the illustrious alumni by Radio Journalist Bryan is being featured every Wednesday from 6 pm to 6.30 pm on Radio Salesian 90.8 FM – The Voice of the Hills.
The effort was one of the activities marking 80th year celebrations of Salesian College Sonada (SCS) re-located from Shillong to Gorabari village near Sonada in 1938 was to find out more about 100s of its alumni spread all over the world.
