Sonada — On the fourth anniversary of its founding, Radio Salesian – the Voice of the hills – joined Community Radio Association (CRA) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in launching a series of five programs each to fight the social evil of child marriage and promoting health of the girl child.
The program was launched on Saturday 7th December 2019 at a significant function held at Salesian College AV Hall, in the presence of a galaxy of eminent local leaders including radio journalists, community radio volunteers from neighbouring Mirik and Kurseong; community elders and college students.
Radio Salesian programme coordinator Radio Journalist Samir Chhetri said, “the programme aims at educating young girls and preventing child marriage.”
At the program launching ceremony, RJ Samir played promos of the programme as well as samples of Interview with child marriage victim; exposed the main drivers of child marriage; What human rights does child marriage violate?; Punishment in cases of child marriage; and The prevalence of child marriage in India and especially in the hills?
The episodes on girl child’s health included topics like: Menstrual hygiene and health; Effects of mobile phone on child’s health; How does fear affect a child’s health?; Breast feeding, and How to prevent a newborn from getting sick.
The 28 minute programs which started airing from Monday 9th December 2019 will continue till 15th January 2020, with repeats of the same.
Station Director, Fr C.M. Paul congratulated the Radio Journalists for coming up with rich program content with the help of community experts, at a very short notice.
He complemented the RJs saying, “This could be the only Nepali language broadcasting station in India, reaching beyond Indian border to Nepal.”
