Salesian College Sonada organised an Inter College Workshop on ‘Gender Equity and Gender Sensibility’ in collaboration with Women’s Cell and Human Rights Cell of the college, 6 October 2018.The 2 hour program was held in the college auditorium with some 15 students also from Jorebunglow College, Ghoom along with two faculty members Assistant Professors Mr. Ashwant Kathal and Ms. Angela Chhetri.
The program started with a skit on gender sensitivity and equity presented by students under the leadership of Assistant Professor Mr. Vasudeva Naidu.
In his introductory speech Fr. Principal Dr. (Prof) George Thadathil spoke in clear terms on Gender Equality saying, “Gender is socially constructed – masculine and feminine – aspects of our personality.” Gender equality is the process of being fair to women and men, because equity leads to equality,” explained Dr. Binu Thomas Chandy from Sociology Department of Sikkim Government College, the workshop resource person.
Dr. Binu talked about the difference between sex and gender, gender inequality, and gender discrimination, gender sensitivity and gender equality.
The workshop was jointly organised by Women’s Cell director Assistant Professor Ms. Bedika Rai and Human Rights Cell director Assistant Professor Dr. Romana Lepcha of SCS. It was sponsored by United Board, Hong Kong.
While Ms. Ragini Chettri anchored the program, Ms. Cheki Sherpa gave the vote of thanks.
